I am guessing that many of you do not realize that you cannot just take a seed from the vegetable or fruit you buy from the store and replant it. Sure it will grow. But, what grows will not resemble what you are eating, and may not even be edible. Genetic seeds grow almost all of the food we currently consume. Many of you folks under forty do not have any idea how many different varieties of tomatoes and corn and other fruits and vegetables there are and how good they taste.
In fact, if you are a tomato lover and sunk your teeth into a heirloom tomato you WILL be ruined for life. You just will not want to eat store bought tomatoes any longer. Heirloom seeds provide economic diversity. Heirloom seeds require a little (not much) more care, they are more susceptible to disease and blight, but the difference in flavor and nutrition is profoundly different than the genetically engineered seeds that drive todays factory farms.
Fortunately for us there are people out there that keep saving and growing these wonderful seeds. You can buy heirloom seeds from HeirloomSeeds.com or from the Southern Heirloom Seed Exchange. There are other places on the web. Just Google the term "Heirloom Seeds."
Save money?
With your harvest you can save heirloom seeds. At a couple bucks per pack the savings can add up, and in return you get a better tasting product. Also, don't forget the savings at the grocery store harvesting your own vegetables.
It is time for a resurgance of "victory gardens" that continue this time honored tradition of growing, saving, and trading seeds and vegetables with your neighbors.
